Creating a Healthy Habitat: Room Temperature Guidelines

Relaxed woman sitting, leaning back on couch in air conditioned room. The ideal temperature for your home is determined by a variety of factors, including the region, the time of year, and personal choices. In general, your home’s healthiest temperature is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Most people find this temperature range to be comfortable, and it can help prevent health problems such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and hypothermia.

However, the optimal temperature for each room in your house may vary. For illustration, the bedroom must be cooler than the rest of the house, with a temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature range can help you sleep better and reduce the risk of developing sleep-related health problems. These recommendations will help you and your loved ones stay comfortable and healthy throughout the year.

Adjust Home Temperatures as Needed

Many individuals usually find a temperature range between 68 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit to be pleasant. However, it’s crucial to remember that the optimal temperature may change for different people or places in the house.

For illustration, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests a temperature of about 64 degrees Fahrenheit for a healthy, fully-dressed individual. This temperature is considered optimal for sleeping as well. However, to prevent health hazards, they recommend that the incapacitated, elderly, or young must be in rooms no colder than 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, if you or anyone in your household suffers from allergies or respiratory issues, keeping the room temperature above 61 degrees Fahrenheit is advisable. Low temperatures can exacerbate respiratory problems, particularly in persons with asthma or allergies.

Optimal Temperature by Room

Depending on where you spend the most time, adjust the temperature in specific rooms for optimal health and comfort. Attempt to achieve the following temperatures:

  • Living Room: Maintaining a temperature range of 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit in the living room is considered safe for optimal health. Lower temperatures can produce cold and discomfort, while higher temperatures might result in overheating and dehydration.
  • Bedroom: Because you spend the majority of your time in the bedroom at night, it is critical to keep it comfortable and healthy for sleeping. To do this, adjust the temperature between 62-66 degrees Fahrenheit. This range will help regulate your body temperature while you sleep and prevent sweating or shivering.
  • Kitchen: Because of the higher activity levels while cooking and baking, the kitchen should be less warm than other rooms in the house. The recommended temperature range for the kitchen is between 60-64 degrees Fahrenheit. This range will keep you comfy while in the room and can help increase the shelf life of certain food items.
  • Bathroom: Keep the bathroom temperature lower than other rooms in your rental home to prevent mold and mildew formation. The recommended temperature range is in the low 70s. This range can help discourage fungi from spreading and eliminate any musty odors.

Always pay heed to whatever cues your body sends you. If you are feeling too hot or cold, the temperature may need to be adjusted. Moreover, symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, or dry skin may indicate that the temperature is not optimal for your health.

Make sure your rental home is adequately insulated to prevent heat loss during the winter months. Plus, to keep your home cool during the summer, utilize curtains or blinds to block out sunlight. Consider utilizing a programmable thermostat to automatically regulate the temperature, depending on your schedule and choices.
